PSR Pet Food Drive set for February 1 to March 1

Pet Love Program helps older adults help their pets

FARMVILLE, Va. (January 29, 2025) – Piedmont Senior Resources (PSR) knows that for older adults on a limited budget, dogs and cats are more than pets — they’re also best friends. To help maintain that friendship, PSR is planning a Pet Food Drive from February 1 through March 1 to collect pet food and donations for its Pet Love Program.

“The PSR Pet Love Program isn’t just about pet food — it’s about keeping older adults and their furry companions together,” said Nikki Dean, PSR Nutrition Coordinator. “By providing pet food and supplies, we’re helping make sure no one has to choose between feeding themselves or their pet. It’s a simple way to make a big difference in the lives of the older adults we serve.”

PSR will distribute the pet food to low-income, homebound older adults who receive PSR Home Delivered Meals services.

Donations of both dry and wet cat/dog food (13 to 18-pound bags preferable) and clumping cat litter will be accepted. Pet food (Purina brand preferred) must be new, unopened, and within the expiration date. Donations can be dropped off at the PSR office at 1413 South Main Street in Farmville.

PSR will also accept food donations made through online purchases from Chewy, Amazon or Walmart, with delivery to the PSR address above.

Serving in-need residents in PSR’s service area of Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward counties, the Pet Love Program started with supplying pet food and has grown to include pet supplies and veterinary care.

“We have clients tell us they wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning if it wasn’t for their pets.” Dean said. “Helping these pets stay healthy and alleviating our clients’ monetary burden is what the PSR Pet Love Program is all about.”

During the 2024 fundraiser, over 100 clients and approximately 200 pets were enrolled in the PSR Pet Love Program.

“Pets are extremely important to the health and well-being of everyone but especially the elderly,” PSR Executive Director Justine Young said. “PSR’s Pet Love Program works hard to provide pet food, supplies and veterinary care for the pets of seniors who struggle to take care of their furry friends. Public support for this program is greatly appreciated!”

Monetary donations can be made by visiting https://psraaa.org/pet-love and clicking the donate button.
